Caius continues to climb higher. You examine your reflections in the floor, and you take a cursory glance at the titles on the shelves. You try to (casually) determine if there's a significance to their colors, or further deduce how they're arranged... but it's still a mystery. It would probably help if you could understand half of the titles, but most of them are in strange symbols you don't recognize.

Unsure of other action to take, you start to climb the shelf after Caius. You tell Dr. Finch that if he doesn't think he can make the climb, he can stay on the floor and attempt to find a librarian... or a list of rules, or a directory, or... anything.

Not long after you start to climb, though, Dr. Finch begins to climb the shelf as well. "Given how strange this library's architecture is," Dr. Finch mutters, "I do not want to become separated and lost."

Caius stops climbing, waiting for you and Dr. Finch to catch up before he begins again. He climbs much slower, allowing you two to keep up.

You climb for... a while. You don't feel exhausted, oddly--your limbs aren't sore, you aren't out of breath, everything's fine. It feels as strenuous as walking. It may be another side of effect of this place not being "designed" for you--it's almost like the reality you're used to, just... some of the details are wrong.

Caius was right, though--it does feel weird. The texture of the shelves doesn't... register right. You have to watch your hands to make sure you're actually grabbing on.

The climb up is very long.

You take the opportunity to read the back of Caius's shirt. It's a list of old tour dates of the band advertised on the front of his shirt.

You begin to see spaces in the shelves, where no books are. The books around the holes manage to stay upright, somehow, and beyond the books... well, you don't see the back of the bookshelf. You see the blackness of space, and distant stars.

You turn to look. Dr. Finch has slipped. He dangles from one arm, held tight by Caius.

One of the books tumbles downward, disappearing as it falls into the obscurity below. Dr. Finch likely reached for a shelf, and accidentally grabbed a book instead.

"I gotcha," Caius says. Dr. Finch holds onto Caius's arm with both hands. Caius has one hand gripping tightly to Dr. Finch's wrist, the other hand still holding the shelf. He makes it look effortless. Caius is just about to swing Dr. Finch back toward the shelf... when he stops. You see him tense up. Dr. Finch's expression sinks. You feel it right after they do.

The burning and the bitterness on your tongue. The sticking in your throat.

A librarian is coming.

Here's hoping the librarian is coming to help, rather than berate. I don't know that there's anything we can do in the current situation, other than owning up, apologizing and being as polite as possible.

If the librarian isn't too angry, we should try asking for help. Or maybe even some info on how much further it is.

Quickly apologize and promise to climb down to retrieve the book so you can put it back on the shelf.

Specifically with Caius, though, he seems to be very good at climbing.

I somehow doubt escaping the librarian is a realistic possibility.

we should wait for the librarian apologize and ask the Librarian for help in getting the book we need so as to make sure this doesn't happen again as well as offer to get the book that fell and put back in its proper place

Agreed. Worst case, they'll probably just remove Finch from the Library. If someone tries to go get the book and we aren't supposed to do that, it could be trouble.

Stay and talk to the librarian.

We should take this chance to apologize, and to ask about the library. If the librarian is hostile, then uh...

climb like your life depends on it even though it probably does

Now you done goofed, Dr. Finch. Pray the librarian is vulnerable to humble apologies (or hugs).

There's no telling if anything we've done with the red will work right here. All we can bring to a confrontation is punches, and punches may not work right here either.

We could try to retrieve the book that dropped. We could try to do so quickly by blooding finch's labcoat, dropping it, and having it carry the book up. But what says that blood works like normal here?

Another option would be to race towards the book we're here for and either use that to ward off the libarian, use it to get out of here, or take the book and leave before the librarian reaches us.

If we're doing anything that involves climbing fast, everyone should get adrenaline if we're still capable of making that.
